The island
nation of Jamaica gained independence
from Britain on August 6, 1962. August
6, 2012, the date of
JAMBANA™,
is
Jamaica's 50th anniversary of
independence.
JAMBANA™
is the
largest event in Canada showcasing
Jamaica's culture and will be the
largest event under Canada's Jamaica50
celebration.
Jamaica is known for extraordinary
achievements in athletics and sports. It
is the first nation ever to have 100m
sprint titles for all ages at all major
levels at once. World Youth Olympics,
world Youth Championships, Commonwealth
games , World Championships and the
Olympics.
On Monday, August 6, 2012, the quest
for gold continues and
JAMBANA™
will broadcast
live from Olympic Stadium in London:
Men's 100m: victory ceremony, Women's
200m: round 1, and Women's 100m Hurdles:
round 1 and Women's 400m Hurdles:
semi-finals.
Jamaica's
relationship with Canada will also be a
highlight of the celebrations. One of
Canada's leading financial institutions
opened a branch in Kingston Jamaica
before branches were open in Ontario.
Trade between Canada and Jamaica dates
back to the 1800‟s. Jamaica produced and
supplied a unique brand of Jamaican rum
known as Screech for the province of
Nova Scotia. The province supplied dried
salted cod, which is a part of Jamaica's
national dish, Ackee and Salt Fish. The
relationship also extends in other
areas, Canada's first Prime Minister Sir
John A McDonald married Jamaica Susan
Agnes Macdonald (née Bernard), on
February 16, 1867.
